Any man who beat up his woman didn’t deserve to have good hands.

Now if a man beat up my woman; that was another case entirely. Gerald took me to Kibi’s. The guy sat outside at that time of the night, drinking beer, and chatting with men I assumed were his neighbours. His neighbourhood was alive and busy, rowdy, with prostitutes all over the place.

Where on earth did this guy meet Sybil from?

Gerald raised his voice. “Kibi?”

He startled and looked in our direction and joy filled my heart at the instant mask of terror on his face.

“Please, sir. I posted bail,” he said. “Please we just finished shooting, I said I should relax a bit.” As he spoke, he approached.

I had warned Gerald not to be aggressive.

Gerald shook his hand. “That’s not why we came, Kibi. We just need something from you.” I kept my hands in my jean pockets.

We looked harmless, both in jeans and T-shirts. Gerald turned back toward my Range parked along the road. The brute, and woman-batterer followed us like a sheep.

One of the guys called out. “Kibi, you good?”

He answered. “No wahala.”

If only he knew. But I guess he did.

Later on our way back, I imagine his friends must have heard his feminine screams, as I dislodged four fingers, two thumbs and two middle fingers. He would never be able to hit anything again because I didn’t break bones that could be fixed but tendons.

“What did he do, Captain?”

I looked at the young man with me. We’d only met the previous week and I couldn’t be more than a couple of years older. But they all respected me because of where I came from. What could I say?

“He beats his girlfriend. He travelled two hundred kilometres just to beat her up,” I said.

“Wow! That should be the girl—Sybil? Why? Because we got him arrested?”

“Yeah.”

“The other two guys have been denied bail. The detectives have to follow up on the case. No bribe will free anyone.”

I smiled. “Thanks for doing a good job.”

When I got back home, I wanted only to be with Sybil. I slept off thinking about her and woke early to my fitness routine – I jogged around the neighbourhood for about forty minutes – thinking about her. I took a quick shower and returned to her hotel. She was asleep. Still. Good.

I left a message I would be around for lunch, and went to work. Most of the previous day, I’d been off and we had a training on-going. The young naval officers were eager. We were going on water for rescue missions. It would entail holding their breath for long minutes and probable combat under water. Gruelling.

The routines helped me to focus on the job and not the woman I kept special to my heart. At lunch time, we were nowhere near land, and I didn’t get to the hotel till close to six in the evening, sure she’d packed her bags and gone. I kicked myself for not sending her a message before venturing out.
